World Cup: Round 3, Day 2: Some Comebacks
Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 12:43PM
Only one player who didn't win yesterday won today, while three of yesterday's defeatees returned the favor. Polgar beat Gelfand with a kingside attack, Areshchenko won a model bishop ending against Jakovenko's Scotch, and Karjakin showed the power of passed pawns against Navara. Those three matches are thus headed to tiebreaks tomorrow.
The six match winners are Vitiugov (over Sakaev), So (over Kamsky - no more Americans), Ponomariov (over Motylev), Mamedyarov (over Wang Hao), Vachier-Lagrave (over Yu Yangyi) and Shirov (the only of the winners who got there by winning game 2, over Tomashevsky).
More results, and games here.

This post is already the 8th Google hit for the word "defeatees". The 7th hit is this essay by Alvin Plantinga (PDF). Doesn't fall too far from the tree there :-)
5th hit is its use in a NY Times Sunday crossword clue, so by my standards the word is legit :-).
Been too busy for much commenting, or chess work apart from continual data-taking, but am enjoying the items as-always. My comment on the Tal Memorial last-round item that Ivanchuk would "rue" the missed opportunity vs. Kramnik is unfortunately true in spades. One can still hope that all his activity will help him work this off.
So is certainly "for real". The new battle of generations is being joined! But with draws topping 70% at the Tal Mem, is there enough "play" in the game to support them?
Oops, essay *on* not *by* Plantinga. It would help if I read the thing...
