The Daily Update: Korchnoi-Spassky, Day 2; European Rapid Championship, Day 1
Former world champion Boris Spassky got on the scoreboard today against his ancient rival, but only to the tune of half a point. It seemed like a pretty "correct" game, and the upshot is that Viktor Korchnoi leads 1.5-0.5 in this eight game match. (The game and reports can be found here and here.)
Meanwhile, in Warsaw, Vladimir Malakhov continued his hot play (from the World Cup, in case you've forgotten, where he made it to the tie-breaks in the semi-finals before being eliminated) with an 8-0 start. Seven GMs are a point behind, but the big name guys (Ivanchuk, Shirov, Movsesian and the player who can be #1 in a year or two) are on 6.5. I think there will be five more rounds tomorrow, but I'm not sure. You can explore the tournament site (in Polish) for yourselves.
