Boris Spassky Commentating at Gibtel
Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 10:13PM
For more than three hours at that. Have a look here - he starts to comment at around 3:33:35. (For those of you who are fairly new to chess, Boris Spassky was the original post-war prodigy, making the Candidates as a teenager and setting the record for the youngest GM until Fischer broke it. He was also the world champion from 1969 to 1972. In case you think those were the dark ages, he has an even score against Kasparov, and that's not because he beat Garry in simuls when the latter was in short pants.)

I first saw Spassky as a commentator on Shelby Lyman's coverage of one of the Karpov - Kortchnoi matches. Boris stoled the show. Not only was he an engaging personality his superior grasp of the game was evident even when compared to a GM like Edmar Mednis. When the other analysts (all National Masters and above, including Mednis) seemed to be trying to get a handle on the position, Boris usually had already picked out the best line of play and was waiting to see if the players had come to the same conclusions. When Spassky talks it is always a pleasure, and an education, to listen.
