This Week's ChessVideos Show: A First Look at Shulman-Kamsky

Dennis Monokroussos in ChessVideos Presentations, US Championship 2010

This is a game from the US Championship, but not the Armageddon final. Rather, it's from the last round of the final four quad. Shulman had White there, too, and the sharp opening made it a battle of preparation. Kamsky's choice of the Gruenfeld was very sharp, and he chose a line with a fairly dodgy reputation. Nevertheless, his preparation was better, and he drew easily while using very little time on his clock, while Shulman burned most of his, ultimately in a fight to prove a draw.

The game was almost all about the opening, and so I go into pretty serious depth into the variation chosen in the game. In part 1, which is up now, I look at the main alterative to Kamsky's sideline, and then leave off after move 14. Next week I'll finish, and I hope that my viewers will accept the challenge at the end of the video to analyze that position for all it's worth. Black's position looks precarious, and although Kamsky got away with it and said afterwards that the variation is "just a draw", it's worth noting that he didn't repeat it for the Armageddon game! I've done a fair amount of work on the line, which I'll present next time, but it would be interesting to see what everyone else comes up with too.

Again, the show is here, is free (free registration is required), and will be available on-demand for the next month or so.
