World Mind Games in Beijing

This event, the SportAccord World Mind Games, might be thought of as "Amber Light" (to borrow a clever phrase from Thomas Richter, who informed me of its occurrence). This is first of all because it, like the now sadly discontinued Amber tournaments sponsored by Joop van Oosterom, it consists of double-rounds made up of a blindfold and a rapid game. Second, it's enormously strong, but perhaps because of the ongoing London Chess Classic it's not as strong as it could be. Still, with the participation of stars like Vassily Ivanchuk, Sergey Karjakin, Vugar Gashimov, Alexander Grischuk, Ruslan Ponomariov and Gata Kamsky, along with Chinese stars Wang Hao and Wang Yue and a host of other 2700-level players, it's a great event! (Note that unlike Amber, there's a concurrent women's event as well.)

It started December 8 and runs through the 16th, so once the London tournament is over we'll all have more time to catch up on the action over there.
