It's a great cartoon, but I have a feeling the artist may have incurred the wrath of the politically correct crowd by depicting Liem as a dog.
Liem is scavenging the lesser tournaments that the elite can't be bothered with, but his inclusion in the cartoon, even as a dog, signifies that Liem will be among the elite of the future. With Jose Diaz there is always meaning. Speaking of which, I don't get why Carlsen is depicted as this jowly, heavyset Viking. I would have expected a play on his "G-Star getup" as ChessBase recently put it in a photo caption.
I think Topalov is in the suit of armor by the door to demonstrate his separation from his colleagues and the chess world. In that case, I would have added Danailov as a rat scurrying around on the floor.
[DM: Regarding Danailov: Ouch. Regarding LQL, Dortmund isn't scavenging, though he had to qualify twice to get there. It is a little funny for Diaz to include him at this point, though, when he's not yet 2700.]
Oh, I assumed that the dog was little Anish Giri...
But you've all missed the main point of the cartoon- that the big fat faceless 'waiter' is the global recession and he's REMOVING all the tasty joints away from the table (ouch- for all of us, sadly).
Regarding Le Quang Liem. In most culture, especially Asian, being depicted as a dog is not flattering, to say the least, even when the intention is good (Le is fast becoming part of the elite). Would not be surprised if Le, and his fans, find it insulting
