A Contrarian on Korchnoi
Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 1:01AM A few days ago we wished Viktor Korchnoi a happy birthday, as did many other chess sites. Korchnoi's chess and fighting spirit are universally commendable, but although he is capable of coming across in pleasantly impish manner, he hasn't always been a beacon of sunshine and happiness. Here's how Korchnoi's contemporary and fellow GM, Evgeny Vasiukov, sees it.

Oh dear, that photo halfway down the page is badly mis-titled. It's clearly from the 1974 Candidates Final, not Merano 1981. I know because I've seen it before anyway, but there are several visual clues that should make it obvious (age of the players, two Soviet flags, hideous decor)...
