Of course the Candidates tournament is the biggest deal, but that's still a few days away. Right now the biggest event is the European Championship, and Alexander Motylev is in clear first with 5.5/6; five rounds remain. There's also the unusual festival in Brazil that saw Magnus Carlsen win the first stage; the second is ongoing. There's the "Battle of the Americas", which is a part rapid, part blitz match between Leinier Dominguez of Cuba and Ray Robson of the United States. (In Saturday's action both players won with Black, first Robson and then Dominguez.) Cappelle la Grande finished in a tie for first between Axel Bachmann and Sergei Azarov (if there was a first place settled by tiebreak it would have been won by Bachmann). Finally, the quite strong 10-round Reykjavik Open is six rounds in, and Dutch GMs Robin van Kampen and Erwin l'Ami are sharing the lead with Bassem Amin of Egypt; all three have 5.5 points. Eight players are half a point behind with 5/6, including Walter Browne. A pleasant blast from the past!
