Gabor Papp Wins the World Open
The modestly labeled "World Open" isn't the prominent beast among open events that it used to be, but it's still an impressively strong tournament here in the U.S. Traditionally located in Philadelphia (or its suburbs) and taking place on the Independence Day weekend, the 2016 version finished in a 7-way tie for first. Gabor Papp of Hungary won on tiebreaks, ahead of Viktor Bologan, Tamaz Gelashvili, Gil Popilski, Alex Shimanov, Vasif Durarbayli, and Ilya Nyzhnyk, each with 7/9.
And they did the "World" part of the World Open proud: all seven were from different countries, none of which - alas - is the U.S. (On the other hand, nine of the 11 players in the next score group were from the USA.)

As someone who was present at the World Open--as a spectator, though--I can say that it was a well-run event, and very enjoyable.
There's plenty to do and see at these huge open events, even if you're NOT playing.
