TCEC Season 12 Superfinal Set: Komodo vs. Stockfish
Congratulations to the Komodo team, which has not only qualified for the season 12 superfinal but even won the qualifying stage, half a point ahead of defending champion Stockfish! Stockfish went undefeated in the qualifier and went +1 in its eight-game mini-match against Komodo, but Komodo did more damage against the bottom two engines in the field to take first place overall with a score of 31/48. Stockfish scored 30.5, and this time around it was Houdini that was the odd engine out with 29.5 points. The rest of the pack is still eating the big three's dust, as the fourth place engine, Fire 7, scored only 22 points - though it did score an undefeated +1 against Houdini.
The super-final begins this coming Monday, which may mean that a Komodo mini-upgrade might come out in the next few days. (Their last upgrade was on the 4th of the month, so Komodo subscribers may want to log on to their accounts and get the latest version if they haven't already.)

How about the best three of the premier compete in the Superfinal be all play all 100 games each in the next seasons?
[DM: I wish they would do something like that, as long as the top three are so far ahead of their competitors. When other engines catch up, going to a four-engine final or back to two would make more sense, but not now.]
Just wondering why match point scoring isn't used; as game point is analogous to using goals scored over matches won in say a football competition? IMO under the current regime the performance of the weaker engines influence the final standings of the top engines.
[DM: Is the idea that if A and B beat C by 6-0 and 3.5-2.5, respectively, it counts the same in both cases: 1-0, but that A will have a better tiebreak score? It's an interesting idea, but it too breaks down in certain situations. The extreme case is one where engine B wins every match by a 3.5-2.5 score, while engine A beats everyone else 6-0. My inclination is to think that B is a tough opponent for A, but not overall better than A. But one might agree with that but think that one is likelier to get the right result with match point scoring than the traditional system. Maybe - I'll leave that to the mathematicians.]
