It's time for another FIDE Grand Prix knockout tournament, once again featuring 16 super-GMs squaring off in Mikhail Tal's old stomping grounds: Riga, Latvia. Here, in bracket order, are the pairings for the first-round matches:

The event runs from July 12-24, and each round is a best of two (one game a day), with (increasingly) rapid games played on the third day of each round, if necessary. The further one goes in the tournament, the more Grand Prix points he collects - but there are additional points to be had by winning a match in the classical stage.

About the Grand Prix itself: there are 22 players in all, each of whom plays in 3 of the 4 tournaments. The top two overall receive an invitation to next year's Candidates tournament, to see who will be fed to Magnus Carlsen at the end of the year. (Assuming he's playing then the way he is now, which isn't a given.)
