Other Events: Leon & Danzhou Finish
When we left off Saturday, Vassily Ivanchuk had won the first semi-final match in Leon, defeating Nihal Sarin 2.5-1.5 thanks to a win in game 3. On Sunday, Parham Maghsoodloo defeated Jaime Santos Latasa by the same score, 2.5-1.5, though achieved very differently. Their first game was drawn, and then Maghsoodloo won the next two games to clinch the match. As often happens when a game becomes competitively meaningless to the winner of a match or tournament, he lost.
On to the final. Game 2, when Ivanchuk had White, was a clean draw, while Ivanchuk enjoyed big advantages in games 1, 3, and 4. So he won? No. Maghsoodloo acquired 2.5 points in those three games, winning games 1 and 4 and thus the match by a 3-1 score.
As for the super-tournament in Danzhou, Richard Rapport maintained his slim advantage over the last rounds as almost all the games were drawn. All four games were drawn in round 6, the penultimate round, and in round 7 the only decisive game saw Santosh Vidit beat Wang Hao. If Wang Hao had won (never a realistic possibility in the game), he'd have tied Rapport for first; instead, both Wang Hao and Vidit finished on 50%.
Final Standings:
1. Rapport 4.5/7
2-3. Yu Yangyi, Wei Yi 4
4-6. Vidit, Artemiev, Wang Hao 3.5
7. Inarkiev 3
8. Amin 2
