Dennis Monokroussos in AlphaZero, Vladimir Kramnik, chess variants

Tinker, tinker, retired chess star...

Do we need new variants on our game? Maybe correspondence players do, but I see no evidence that even super-GMs do, let alone the rest of us. We're perfectly capable of screwing up our games, even when we're playing openings and middlegame structures we've already used eleventy millions times.

A better question is, would new variants be interesting? To that question, one's mileage may vary, so why not? If you're looking to try something new, Vladimir Kramnik has an idea or two, or seven, that might tickle your fancy, including no-castling chess and the option to take your own pieces. He has tested them out with AlphaZero, and you can read more about it, here.
