While the Candidates duke it out for the right to play Magnus Carlsen for the world championship, Carlsen himself, and 15 others, are contesting another online rapid event. (Official site here, simpler/just the facts, ma'am site here.) The tournament started on Saturday, and follows a familiar format: three days of preliminaries (five rounds per day) to winnow the field from 16 players down to eight, followed by a series of two-day knockout matches consisting of pairs of mini-matches. (You all know the drill by now.)

Teimour Radjabov was the leader on the first day with 4/5, but now, after two days, it's Carlsen who leads with 7/10, half a point ahead of Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja; Radjabov, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, and Le Quang Liem are each a further half a point behind.

Those who have been following the game are invited - nay, urged! - to point out especially interesting games in the comments. Once the Candidates tournament ends, I expect to take a closer look here.
