In fact, it started on Saturday. It's the last event of the year's Meltwater Tour (or the last "regular" event; the final will start September 25), a rapid tournament with a format that's very familiar at this point. First up, a 16-player round-robin that will cut the field to a final eight, who will engage in knockout matches made up of two mini-matches (with a blitz playoff and then Armageddon if necessary).

At this point, the preliminary stage is 2/3 finished - 10 rounds out of 15 are in the books. Vladislav Artemiev is in the lead with an undefeated 7.5/10, half a point ahead of Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian. As the scores don't carry over into the knockout stage, what matters most is finishing in the top eight. Rounding out the top eight are Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (6.5), Wesley So and Alireza Firouzja (6 points each), and Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Anish Giri (5.5 points each).

Outside the top eight are some major stars, including Sinquefield Cup winner Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and co-runner-up Leinier Dominguez, who are tenth and eleventh, respectively, with 5 and 4.5 points. A surprise is that ninth place is currently occupied by Daniel Naroditsky, known as a very strong online blitz player but perhaps an unknown quantity in rapid chess. The other U.S. player isn't doing as well, but it's still a great opportunity for Awonder Liang to get some experience against many of the world's top players.
