Capablanca Memorial Ends: Players Pay Tribute By Trying To Prove Capa's "Draw Death" Thesis
The worst elite super-tournament of recent times (at least that I can remember) has finished, and good riddance. Wesley So won with an undefeated 6.5/10, a point ahead of Lazaro Bruzon. Bruzon was also undefeated and the only other player with a plus score. Leinier Dominguez finished with 5, Zoltan Almasi and Franscisco Vallejo had 4.5, and Vassily Ivanchuk came in last with 4 points, and was the only winless player in the event.
There were only eight decisive games out of 30, and while draws can be effortful 11 of the 22 were drawn in fewer than 30 moves. (We can add the 33-mover Bruzon-Dominguez from the last round, which simply copied all 32 moves of Andreikin-Kramnik from this year's Candidates' before adding 33.Rxc5 and draw agreed.) To be fair, the first half of the tournament was generally pretty hard fought, but the second half was soporific in the extreme.
