Ashland Eagles to Prey on the Indiana (PA) Crimson Hawks Tomorrow (Thursday)
Honest, this is not turning into a college football blog. The reason I'm mentioning this game is because I'm working with Ashland's chess club. This started last year, and I'm going to be more involved this year. My hope is that it will progress to a chess team, and this is where those of you who live in or near Ohio come in. If you are or know of an at least reasonably strong chess-playing youngster who is looking to attend college in the next year or two, and is willing to consider Ashland University, let me know. (By reasonably strong I'm thinking 1800-2000 or up. Of course even stronger players are very welcome. And it is by no means the case that lower-rated players aren't welcome; it's just that it will be easier to persuade the administration to make a team and invest money if stronger players are signing up.) If interest warrants it, scholarship money will become available, plus the student will have access to my coaching and what we hope will be a cohort of strong peers. Those interested in finding out more, please drop me a note through the contact link, or you can leave a comment but indicate that it's for me personally rather than for publication on the blog.
Returning to the subject line, though, Ashland has an unusual tradition of starting their season with a Thursday night game before doing the normal thing and playing the rest of their games on Saturdays. Unlike a certain other college football team you may have heard of, their games won't be nationally televised, but you can dig up some radio coverage tomorrow night at 7 p.m. ET via the "coverage" links on this page.
Go Eagles - and better still, consider becoming a "Chess Eagle"!
