The Week in Chess: Moving? Ending?
The Week in Chess's 14-year run under the auspices of the London Chess Centre is coming to an end (HT: Brian Karen), and that's a pity. So now it looks like the question is whether its founder and prime mover, Mark Crowther, will be able to raise subscribers to continue the work at a new site. If he can, that would be great. I will certainly subscribe, and if only out of gratitude for all the years of work he put in for us and for the information revolution he helped birth, many more of us should as well. Frankly, it would be most appropriate if companies like ChessBase not only subscribed but gave him a very generous donation, as they used his work and then allowed their users to download it each week from their sites while taking the raw data for their (for-purchase) databases as well. The chess world owes him a huge debt of gratitude, and that gratitude ought to be expressed in a tangible way.
If the subscribers (and donors) don't show up, then we'll have to wish Mark the best in his subsequent endeavors.
