Mind Games in China
A very strong rapid, blitz, and Basque event (the Elite Mind Games) is taking place in Huaian, China. More precisely, a rapid tournament took place, the blitz tournament is taking place, and the Basque portion will take place starting Wednesday.
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Ruslan Ponomariov tied for first in the rapid event with 5/7, with Mamedyarov winning a one-game playoff to take the title. Leinier Dominguez and Wang Hao finished half a point behind in this elite 16-player field. (How elite? Vassily Ivanchuk finished tied for 14th-15th with 2/7.)
The blitz tournament is still in progress. The same 16 players are in action in a double-round robin, and after 20 of 30 games Ding Liren leads with 14.5, half a point ahead of Pentala Harikrishna and two points ahead of Rauf Mamedov.
