Gibraltar Starts Tomorrow (Tuesday)
It isn't Wijk aan Zee, but the annual open tournament in Gibraltar is an attractive part of the chess fan's yearly calendar. The web coverage is generally very good, and there's a nice mix of elite players and "ordinary" GMs that ensures a lot of fighting chess and plenty of interesting games every round.
I'm not going to cover this event in the kind of depth I gave to Wijk aan Zee, but I'll certainly keep a regular eye on it. After all, the player list includes Veselin Topalov, Hikaru Nakamura, Peter Svidler and five other 2700s, plus Wei Yi (the 15-year-old winner of Wijk's Challengers' Group), Hou Yifan, some young Americans and an old...ish one too - James Tarjan!
Round 1 starts at 3 p.m. local time in Gibraltar (which is also CET) = 9 a.m. ET.
