Notre Dame 45, Air Force 10
Six down, four to go.

Over to you, Mr. Bandleader:
That obvious pun is slightly inapt, however, as Air Force, oddly enough, is primarily a running team. That's not likely to go so well for them either, and we can expect Notre Dame to win in a rout starting in a couple of hours (5 p.m. ET). The Fighting Irish (enjoy the nickname while you can, before the forces of political correctness strike) will win their sixth game of the year, but out of respect for the Armed Forces the beating will apparently be shown only on cable - on the CBS Sports Network.
Pre-game reading material here.
A very strange game! In the first half, both sides drove up and down the field, and it was surprising that both players didn't put up more point. In the second half, neither side scored. Notre Dame's defense played better, especially when it counted, while their offense was just about non-existent after starting QB Tommy Rees was sacked and concussed in the third quarter. The second half was just ugly.
But Notre Dame won to improve to 5-2; five wins to go. Next week's victim: Air Force.
Music time!
Humor calls, but prudence restrains, so I'll keep this one short, straight and to the point: Notre Dame will take on and crush their long-time intersectional rivals from Southern California tonight. It's a home game for Notre Dame, and their victory will be televised on NBC starting at 7:30 p.m. ET. Pregame reading materials are here.
A little less scoring than I expected, but not much less. Down goes #22 Arizona State, and after a week off Notre Dame will beat USC, who lost to Arizona State last week by 21 points.
Four wins down, six to go.
Tune time!
Tonight's game (7:30 p.m. ET) is a must-win for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, as they play Arizona State in...Texas tonight in the Dallas Cowboys' stadium. The final score might look as if the teams were playing basketball, but Notre Dame will finish on top and set things right once more in the college football universe. The festivities will be televised on NBC, and pre-game reading material can be found here.
Notre Dame committed two turnovers in the first minute or so, and as a result started in a 14-point hole. They spent the rest of the game trying to catch up, and made a good run of it, coming within six points early in the fourth quarter. They came close, but not close enough, and lost 35-21. Bah, humbug.
Next week's victim: Arizona State.
We'll get back to chess-related material later today, but it's fall and it's Saturday, so first things first! In about 20 minutes the sporting paragon that is the 23rd-ranked University of Notre Dame football team will take on and take out the visiting 14th-ranked "Sooners" of Oklahoma. (Those rating numbers will likely switch after today's whomping by the home team.)
In honor of Oklahoma's team nickname, but not in honor of the rascals themselves, Notre Dame will engage in repeated and rapid land grabs of the opposing territory until the decimation - shown live at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC - is complete.
Pre-game reading material starts here (follow the link there for part two).
Not as close as the score, but hardly a blowout. Still, a win's a win! Three wins down, eight to go.
Next week's victim: Oklahoma.
And now, music lovers, this:
At 3:30 p.m. today (ET) the 22nd-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame will win their home game against the Michigan State "Spartans", and they won't need 300 players (all of whom are ultimately vanquished) to do it. Look for the poor Michigan State players to collapse in a sweaty heap at the end of the game - a thermal pile, you might say - as the slaughter reaches its finish.
The massacre will be televised on NBC; as usual, pregame reading is available here.
