[DM: I agree that the socialist explanation is a load of claptrap, but the presence of an outlier didn't really undermine their overall domination. For decades they had at least 75% of the world's top players, and then continued to hold the title from 1975 through 2007. Even now, 20 years after the fall of the USSR, not only their former republics but the US, Israel and Germany have a large percentage of their national teams composed of ex-Soviets/players from former Soviet republics.]
