Tal vs. Your Blogger
Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 1:09AM
In this recent post I mentioned Jeremy Silman's reminiscence of Mikhail Tal's trip to the Los Angeles area back in 1988, during which time Tal gave a simul there. I played in that simul, so I was curious to see if I made it into the picture near the top of the article. At first I thought I was, then talked myself out of it, but now think that my initial suspicion was correct. I'm not 100% sure, but think it's 80-90% likely that I'm the guy near the far end of the row Tal is facing, wearing a cap and a dark shirt (or sweater or jacket). The game score may be gone, but at least this little memento survives!

OK, there is a young guy in the corner, but what was the result of your game ?
Any oddities by Tal in the simul ?
By the way, have you happened to meet B. Fischer in any circumstances ?
[DM: As mentioned in the original post about the simul (both in the post itself and in the comments), I lost to Tal. Never met Fischer, though I was - unknowingly - just a few feet away from him once back in the 1980s.]
What a pity for missing a meeting with Fischer !
I have just finished Brady's new book - I have read also your review which prompted me to read the new Fischer book - and I found it a perfect companion to the old Fischer's biography. Especially the pages on his childhood were very touching (i.e. when he got into the chess club for the first time - I remembered my own time when I was an adolescent too). I think Brady was less aggressive towards Bobby in the second book. He seems more to sympathize.
[DM: It's a good book, yes, and I agree with you especially about Brady's discussion of Fischer's childhood. This discussion would be more suitable in the post on Fischer, though.]
