A Post-Match Interview...with Spassky
Friday, December 2, 2016 at 8:53PM
That's Boris Spassky about his own match in 1972, with Bobby Fischer. It's not apropos of anything having to do with the just-finished Carlsen-Karjakin match, but could be of intrinsic interest to chess fans in general. It's just a two-minute clip, here. (HT: Ross Hytnen)

Most Americans, including myself, were thrilled to have Bobby Fischer win the match, especially since he had never beaten Spassky prior to the match. However, Spassky was such an engaging and likable person it was hard not to sympathize with him. This clip showed some of that dignity that he often displayed when things did not go his way. Ironically it seems both he and Fischer lost the desire to dominate chess after becoming World Champions. Fischer, refused to play and Spassky was content to just play chess good enough to make a living at it. They were great talents that worked very hard to win the championship but struggled with having the crown.
