Vachier-Lagrave Wins Match With Svidler
Friday, July 29, 2016 at 11:44PM
There's still a round to go, but Maxime Vachier-Lagrave has clinched match victory against Peter Svidler. He won the rapid portion 2.5-1.5, and with a game to go leads the classical stage 2.5-.5. The classical games count double, but of course it wouldn't matter at this point if they counted 100 times more than the rapid games.
There's a nice report on the match here, and it also notes that MVL's rating is (rounded up) 2820! The '90s generation has taken over, led by those actually born in the year 1990.

"The '90s generation has taken over" - not sure if we can say so, and if so it hasn't happened "yesterday": Currently, six players in the top10 are '90s generation, four (Kramnik, Aronian, Nakamura and Anand) are older and (Kramnik's health problems aside) still competitive - the future will tell for how much longer, with respect to mainly Kramnik and Anand. Next in line are older players (Mamedyarov and Topalov), and overall the top20 and beyond is also a generation mix.
When will players born in this millennium take over or at least join the world elite? Wei Yi (*1999) doesn't count, born 2000 or later: strongest by current Elo seem the US-Americans Xiong, Sevian and the somewhat enigmatic John Burke (hard to say how strong he really is, seems he didn't yet play abroad and faced relatively few GMs).
