Nakamura Cashing In
In the late '90s and into the '00s, Hikaru Nakamura was the king of online blitz. While it was a treat for chess fans to watch him in action, it wasn't a direct source of any money for him, and it was widely thought that this was undermining his classical career. At some point, it seems that he got more serious about "real" chess, reaching #2 in the world at one moment, but now things have gone full circle - with one difference. His classical results have slipped while his blitz game is back to peak levels, and at this point it's probably the right decision, financially speaking.
