The Speed Chess Championship: The So-Sarin Semifinal
Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at 1:49AM
One semi-final of the 2021 Chess.com Speed Chess Championship has finished, and it was a very close battle that came down to the wire. (I'll give the result in the comments.) The winner of the match, which took place on the 13th, will face the winner of the other semifinal. That takes place on Thursday, December 16 at 5:30 p.m. ET, and sees three-time defending champion Hikaru Nakamura take on Ding Liren.

So won 15-14. To the degree that any player was close to being in control, it was So, but Sarin was always nipping at his heels. Both players were resilient, with So coming across as the stronger player overall but Sarin the more opportunistic competitor, making more of his chances than So did. It was a very good match, and Sarin is going to be especially dangerous at these shorter time limit events for years to come.
